[info]darthhellokitty has given me an IDEA. I should have had this idea months ago, but now that I have it, I'm going to release it onto the internet.

WELCOME TO THE SAM'S CAFE JOB FAIR AND TEMP AGENCY. Our motto is, "Being unemployed is some bullshit. Give me a job."

HERE IS WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN. This post is set up with screened comments. If you are unemployed or soon to be so, post here with your job search. Like so:

HI, MY NAME IS Slim Shady Sam.
I COME FROM France Chicago.
WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE A Ninja Office Boy, a dramaturg, or an emperor.
PLEASE SHARE WITH ME Job openings / Jobsearch sites or temp agencies in my field or area / tips from pros working in my field / internship and volunteer opportunities / someone to beta my resume / etc etc etc

Feel free to post anonymously if you wish.

On Sunday morning, about 36 hours from now, I'll unscreen the comments and post a link directing people back to this post. Anyone who has advice, open positions, or helpful links can then scroll through the comments and help you find what you seek.

Our goal is to help three people get jobs. Just three people! Surely the other 2697 of us can find jobs for three of us.

Go ye forth and network.

I'm a Web Developer/Designer for Valencia Community College. In a meeting with the Marketing Department recently, they mentioned they were going to be opening up a position for a copywriter sometime in the near future. They're going to use the new copywriter to keep the content on the public website up-to-date and well written.

If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, keep an eye on http://jobs.valenciacc.edu or email me at lttlmsmagc at gmail dot com and I can let you know when/if the position gets posted.

Over a decade of experience, but the jobs aren't happening. I've been getting by with dried up temp work, short software/business analyst work, and building websites (drupal, wordpress). And some minor voice work - I need to set up a site and do more.

You (and darthhellokitty) are fabulously awesome!

HI, MY NAME IS Rachael.
I COME FROM Bel Air, MD (but close enough to Baltimore to consider jobs there too).
WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE Sam Since that post is filled, I really need a part-time or full time job at a bank or somewhere that is similar to banking hours. My husband works 2nd shift (3-11:30) so I need something that I can work during the day (or weekends when he's off) but leave at 3 or so to pick my kids up from school.

I actually have a CPA and 5 years left on a top secret security clearance, and spent 10 years in auditing at a Big 4 firm but I don't want to go back to the pressure and stress (and travel) of that environment. Bank teller, administrative assistant, something like that is really what I'm looking for right now until my kids are older.

PLEASE SHARE WITH ME Job openings / Jobsearch sites or temp agencies in my field or area.

What a great idea!

Heh. Good idea! Though I'm not sure what percentage of the Cafe is based in the UK, but we'll see...

My name is: Marion

I live in: London, UK

I've been unemployed for just over three years, since taking voluntary redundancy from a job that was driving me crazy. I took two proofreading/copyediting courses at that time, but found it a Catch-22 situation - can't get a job without experience, can't get the experience without a job!

I wanna be: a proofreader/copyeditor/something backroom-ish administrative-wise (possibly using the proofreading?) in publishing, or an industry producing something *concrete* (I've worked in adult education, it doesn't thrill me; I'd rather work for ... an architect. Or a baker. Or a knitting-wool company! Etcetera.) I'm not a 'people-person' - I don't want to be on reception talking to strangers all day! I'd rather beaver away out of sight doing whatever. I am also NOT a statistician, though I can use databases - I don't want to be doing that 24/7, did that in the last job and nearly had a nervous breakdown.

Please share: Job openings; jobsearch sites or temp agencies in my field or area (I already use Craigslist/Gumtree/Monster.co.uk and several others); tips from pros working in my field (volunteer opportunities only possibly if they're likely to lead to a Paid Job). UK only, unless it's jobs that can be done from my desk here at home!

Hi! I don't know if Clearly Secretarial Jobs is one of your several others, but it has tons of London and UK admin positions at any one time; I used it a lot when I was trying to get into PA/admin work. A lot of it is secretarial but there may be something under the 'Administration' section.

Knightsbridge Recruitment might be able to help, too. When I signed up they were very solicitous of my precise requirements. I didn't end up finding a job through them, but I had no qualifications such as yours and when I was looking, there really wasn't a lot out there at all; I suspect things might have changed by now.

My name is Caitlin
I come from Georgia, Metro Atlanta area

When I grow up I want to be a pirate. Or something anthropological. I'm doing an internship now working with social media at a nonprofit, focusing a paper on how social media and the internet have changed the culture of the world, of Atlanta, of nonprofits. I'd like to work with the internet, I'd like to work with culture, . . . I'd like to work. Come December I'm graduated and out of my cozy student assistant position.

Please share with me. . .Anything and everything, please!
Job search sites, Relevant Job Position titles to be on the look out for, Related positions. . . Any and all advice re:going to grad school for this media studies/cultural studies business vs. entering the work force with a BS in Anthropology and a passion for all things internet'y. Resume beta help would not go amiss either!

I'll have next semester off (for a number of reasons)- what should I focus on doing? Applying for grad schools? Temping? Applying for honest-to-goodness real entry level jobs?

I would definitely apply to grad schools, the worst that happens is that you don't get into any, the best is that you get into one and you have a paid TAship for the next few years. :)

With the jobsearch, there are a few options -- you can apply to retail jobs, get one, and work while jobsearching, or you can save those as a last resort if you don't get employed within however many months you set as a deadline.

I was going to share some links with you but I think you could really just benefit from almost every link listed here:

The best thing to do is identify the types of schools at which you'd like to teach and contact them for informational interviews. (I assume you have a teaching degree/certificate.) If you do, contact them, observe classes, go on tours, ask questions. Everyone knows everyone else, so chances are they'll mention vacancies at similar schools. Be persistent, but patient. Schools work more slowly than other work places.

If you don't have a degree/certificate, go to grad school and do your year student teaching. Seriously. You need to be poor for a year or two. You will work until you cry and then work some more, but if you have a good mentor teacher it will be worth it. You can also do alternative certification programs (Teach for America, various Teaching Fellows programs), which involve the being poor and working really hard, just not the mentor teacher. It depends on the student population you'd like to teach, since those programs mostly target high-needs student populations.

Good luck! If you ever have a choice between a degree in science and a degree in education, take the science degree. You can do the ed degree while working/at night.

I don't have nanny experience, but I work in early childhood education program management, and I was a preschool teacher for a long time.

If you are interested in being a nanny, your past experience and references are of utmost importance. If you don't have past experience on a job with children, you should use family members, babysitting clients, etc who can vouch for you as references. Your excellent character is what will get you a job.

As for preschool teaching, you need to meet licensing requirements, but it looks like the requirements are pretty low in Utah - just GED or high school diploma. If you want to work in a public school setting or at a Head Start center (which I would highly recommend), you will find the qualifications will be different.

Here is the Utah Head Start site location page: http://uheadstarta.org/Find%20A%20Program.html - click on the links to find out more about the Head Start agencies (you might have to Google the names of the Head Starts to find the current pages). Head Start is free, federally-funded preschool for children in poverty; their staff development model is very positive and proactive. If you do not have specific education, they will work with you to help you get it.

Working in a for-profit day care center or preschool can be stressful and unpleasant, unless you are at a high quality site (one accredited by NAEYC or some other accreditation agency). However, if you find a good place, you can have a lot of fun.

I get a regular writing magazine (called, interestingly new Writing Magazine) I don't think it is available overseas but I could be wrong. Anyway, one thing they reccomended was this site http://www.associatedcontent.com/ where you write articles and pieces and companies buy them. You can allow the companies sole rights (so you can't use it anywhere else) or partial (in which you can but they don't pay as much) it may not be much, but it might get you some contacts and some stuff for your portfolio.

HI, MY NAME IS Lara.
I COME FROM Sydney, Australia.
WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE a productive member of society, of course! Seriously, I'm looking to move into private office-based employment, or somewhere where I can put my legendary organisational skills into good practice.
PLEASE SHARE WITH ME Job openings in ye olde Sydney town.

I recently finished the best part of three years working for an Australian luxury beauty company, where I rapidly went from a lowly 5 hr p/w casual to the manager of the flagship department store location. Now my idea of a dream job is where I can sit down and I can experience what it's like to not work every consecutive weekend for two years.
I'm a Renaissance kind of person - I come complete with backgrounds in graphic art and design, IT work, merchandising and marketing, retail and customer service and I show up to work early too!

Hi Teresa! (I'm about an hour away from you!)

Things I have found helpful: al.com, birminghamhelpwanted.com (montgomeryhelpwanted for you), craigslist is my favorite place to find jobs.

Also, since you're in school, try the career center at your school. they should be able to help you find a part time job, if not, they will definitely be able to help you find a job in your field when you graduate. And there should be a place, if not the career center, that will help you out with your resume.

Also check out any local agencies that might know about jobs openings that may not be openly advertised.

I've got 6 years of EMT experience on the US east coast. I don't know how much of that translates to California's fire departments, but I can tell you how it works here. The paramedics here work either for the fire department or for private ambulance companies. There are two ways to get trained as a paramedic: get hired by the fire department and attend the fire academy, or spend the money on a three- or four-semester paramedic program at a local college, then get hired. There are two main levels of training: Emergency Health Technician - Basic (EMT-B or just EMT) and Emergency Health Technician - Paramedic (EMT-P or just Paramedic). EMTs can do basic life support skills like CPR, splinting, bandaging, administering oxygen, etc, while Paramedics do all that plus advanced life support including starting IVs, giving medication, and intubating. If you're trying to get hired by a fire department and they're temporarily not hiring, I recommend joining a volunteer fire department (more common in rural areas) while you wait. They'll give you EMT training for free and you'll get lots of experience. Good luck!

my mom was a caterer for most of my childhood as a hobby, not really a job. but. she started off catering weddings (she also baked and decorated wedding cakes) for friends and family (i think she catered her own) and it spun out word of mouth from there. like i said, it wasn't her primary job, so she didn't advertise and tended to stay just based on word of mouth. but as a starting point?? that's awesome.

as it is, she hasn't catered for 10-15 years, and she still gets calls about wedding cakes.

Have you checked university hospitals in the area you're aiming at? Seems like when I was jobsearching, Northwestern and UofC always had technical writer positions going at their medical centres.

HI, MY NAME IS K, and I am very lucky I still have a job. If you are a computer scientist, self-directed, good with eccentric people, not picky about salary, and don't want to work for Big Business, now is a pretty good time to be looking for a job in climate science data management at various national and international labs. Comment if you want to talk. But that's not the main reason I'm writing. Unfortunately I'm the only one in my family who still has a job.

MY BROTHER'S NAME IS M.
HE COMES FROM St. Louis, MO, but would be equally happy (and have friends' houses to crash in) near Kansas City or central NJ.
WHEN HE GROWS UP HE DREAMS TO BE A sports writer or sports publicist, or anything along those lines. He's got an encyclopedia of sports trivia in his head. He has a bachelor's degree in English which he acquired in May 2009.

MY FATHER'S NAME IS J.
HE COMES FROM St. Louis, MO.
WHEN HE GREW UP HE WAS an NC machinist, but he's pretty disillusioned with that field. He's a clever detail-oriented perfectionist, and he'd like to be retrained but we're not sure exactly for what. He has some Autocad experience, he has been the boss of machine shops of >30 people... didn't save him from layoffs, though. He's 57, but too broke for early retirement.

PLEASE SHARE WITH ME retraining ideas for J, job ideas or even internship ideas for M, advice in general for these two.

Can't help with your dad, though he sounds like he'd be a GREAT theatre shop foreman :D As for your brother, has he considered doing local sports broadcasting for high schools and such? Many high schools have radio stations or get radio airtime. R, my ex-roomie, actually got an offer from a pro station to do sports radio, and SAID NO, the fool. :D

hi, my name is morghan.
i live in louisville, ky... but would be willing to move anywhere.

when i grow up (next summer, when i graduate... probably), i'd like to bhe a translator... or at least do something with French (my bachelor's will be in french), but i'm also talented in general office management, and generally invested in info technology as LAN maintenance and customer support for the past couple of years.

please share with me EVERYTHING, pretty much. heh. i'd like to know availability of french-related jobs in your area, any tips you've got in the interpreter/translator field... or if you've found that your area would kill for a french speaking american with skills in office and network maintenance.

Have you thought about doing an ESL program in France? I had a former coworker who did that and had a great time, and I'll bet it'd help with translator applications when you get back. (I'm not sure if these are the people she worked with, but it looks legit: http://www.frenchculture.org/spip.php?rubrique424&tout=ok.)

I'm from the UK so I don't know how much I'll be able to help with Aussie work, but I'm a theatre technician myself. I got into it by volunteering to do every show at my school, then going on to do a Technical Theatre degree at university which was practical and not theoretical. Ask at every local and not-so local theatre if you can do casual work, and be keen and willing to learn. Volunteer with amateur groups to learn the absolute basics. If you can get to Melbourne or Adelaide for their festivals, you'll easily be able to pick up backstage theatre work there - I know the Edinburgh Festival is always always looking for experienced and not-so-experienced-but-willing-to-pitch-in technicians.

Also, and most importantly - always say yes to that post-show drink, because you never ever know what leads it will get you. I've got annual work from one student show I randomly picked up and other people I know have got national tour work from those drinks in the pub. They're so, so vital in theatre!

Good luck. (:
