Last day of work before a five-day weekend for me. HOORAY!

[info]juniper200 linked me to a New York Times article this morning about finding help for mental/emotional issues when you don't have health insurance. It's a difficult subject, mental illness, and the article makes what might be considered some mild mis-steps, if only in perception, but overall it's useful. (I loled a little at "seek out the child psychologist at your child's school". I'm guessing this person has not sent a child to public school in quite a while.)

For those who are lucky enough to have insurance, you can also check out this article on getting treatment and the Mental Health Parity Act.

Anyway, it reminded me of some links I wanted to share from the last HR mailing that I got (the same one that recommended the webinars and caused the webinar plague of Canada).

One Day One Job: A blog about entry-level jobsearching for college grads.
Careers in Nonprofits: Because nonprofits are awesome!
Alltop: Everything ever about careers.
Vistaprint: offering free business cards, though you pay postage and they try to sell you everything else in creation while you're ordering. Still, the designs are neat. I got a set that proclaim me to be "Research, Administration, and Design" :D

How did the job fair go, anyway? Anyone get any bites from it?

My elementary school had a child psychologist, and it was a public school. I think lots of districts have one that works for the whole district. If not, a school counselor should be able to point parents in a good direction.

This. I went to a very nice public school and then to a really crappy one and they both had psychologists. They always do because thy have to have someone who can administer tests to look for learning disabilities.

Neither of my children's public schools has a child psychologist on staff, but the handbooks say "access" to social workers and child psychologists is available with a referral from the school counselor. I've no idea how easy it is to get that referral though.

I suppose it depends on the district. I know that my mum had a hell of a time getting Bernard evaluated at school, and eventually moved to Texas in part because the school system there offered him so much more support.

I *heart* Vistaprint. The shipping is surprisingly quick, the quality is good, and I will NEVER RUN OUT OF BUSINESS CARDS.

Also, I have like six sets of them - personal calling cards, my day-job cards, and multiple sets for Catchn. I'm such a card junkie it's not even funny.

I like Vistaprint! They have outlets in lots of countries (so you don't have to wait ages for overseas post), and the designs are good. You'll perhaps have seen the two different sorts I had done - I think I put them in with the Dalek (and certainly did with Dalek Hat!). I have labels and post-it notes to match, too.

Mind you, I like Moo cards too - different shape, so they catch the eye possibly better than the standard ones, and you can put your own photos on from flickr very easily. I had a couple of sample sets and some day when I have a bit of money to spare, I'm thinking of getting a proper set done.

I have a cautiously optimistic nibble from the Job Fair. *fingers crossed*

BUT HAVE YOU BEEN LOAFED?

If you haven't, I really DO wonder about your post office, because a parcel sent a day later had already made it to Colorado yesterday.

Not so far, but perhaps it will arrive today. I'm kind of hoping it won't until tomorrow actually, because odds are good if it arrives today my stupid mail carrier will make me go down to the post office to get it.

On the other hand, the post office is across the street from that coffee shop you recommended...

Thanks for the links, Sam. I shall peruse them once I've stopped trying to cough up a lung. Damn flu.

I have some business cards from Vistaprint and am really happy with them. A mate designed a logo and I designed the card and they came out great. I ordered a nifty little card holder too.

Now if only they'd stop spamming me....

I have your link saved -- thank you so much! -- but I decided to focus on my application to grad school (due on Tuesday, eep) before following through. Since I am employed, if somewhat tentatively, at two different jobs, I'm making rent and paying for food -- grad school seemed like a bit more of a priority. Soon, though, I will be all over it.

I don't think anyone was looking for a job around here, but South Yorkshire police are wanting archivists to sort through the Hillsborough Disaster files. Jobs are going up on the SY police website *sometime* this week.

Something I found between your job fair and this is http://www.pslawnet.org/ for legal workers/lawyers/law students who want to work in public interest. If you've got a university email address and are on one of their lists (they have a list, of schools and stuff) you can use the service for free.

You think you're forgiven for the clusterfuckinar incident? You're only mildly forgiven. They're taking years off my life.

Instead of dying in my sleep at 77, I'm going to die in my sleep at 76.

For some reason (possibly involving a party I went to tonight) I feel compelled to point out that if you're dying in your sleep at 76 instead of 77, they're only taking year off your life. :D

I know it's just the difference between the UK and US healthcare systems, but I find the idea of having to worry about payment on top of mental health issues utterly terrifying. I was diagnosed with depression today (happy 20th birthday to me), and money just isn't an issue. I can't imagine having to deal with that as well.

Happy birthday :/ And good luck.

You have, btw, just put your finger on the reason there are so many mentally ill homeless people in every major city in America.

Thanks. I hope things get better - it's been like this for years, really, so I'm used to it and shouldn't be complaining, but it's worsened recently to the point where it's affecting my work, and shockingly, Oxford don't really go for that. (At least we apparently have a good counselling service and GPs who are so used to depressed students that they barely bat an eyelid when you mention it.)

The NHS has its faults, but I am immensely grateful for it anyway. Being able to just go and see your doctor (I managed to get a really good doctor) without worrying about money as well is a massive help.

My friend gave me this book, which I found quite useful in terms of understanding some of the funky little tricks depression can play on you. Also, the meditation CD that comes with it is pretty good, and not too naff.

I adore the NHS. I know it has many problems, but imagining a private-healthcare-dominated system is so much worse. My doctor is good, though (in that he is a GP in Oxford, so has seen vast numbers of depressed students and knows what to do), and there's a lot of support available. I'll look at the book, too - thanks!
